Social media can be your best friend or your biggest time sink. The difference comes down to strategy. As a solopreneur, you don’t need to post everywhere. You need to post in the right place, with the right rhythm, and a clear reason. Let me show you how.
Which social media platforms should a solo founder use?
Pick one platform and go deep. Most founders pick three and go nowhere. If your business sells to other professionals, LinkedIn is your home. If you sell to creators or builders, Twitter works well. If your business is visual, use Instagram. If you make tutorials, YouTube is the right choice.
I started on LinkedIn because my audience is solopreneurs and freelancers. Three posts per week for six months got me my first 1000 followers. That’s not fast, but those followers turned into clients. Fast growth on the wrong platform is a waste of time.
Don’t abandon other platforms entirely. Cross-post your best content. But invest 80% of your social energy into one platform. Master it before you expand.
Your Zero to 1000 Followers Cheat Sheet gives you the exact posting strategy for each platform. Follow the playbook for your chosen platform.
How often should you post and what should you say?
Post 3-5 times per week on your main platform. That’s enough to stay visible without burning out. Each post should do one of three things: teach something, share a story, or start a conversation. If it doesn’t fit one of those, don’t post it.
Teaching posts work best for building authority. Share a specific tip from your experience. “Here’s how I doubled my email open rate by changing one line in my welcome sequence.” Story posts build connection. “I almost quit my business last month. Here’s what changed my mind.” Conversation posts drive engagement. “What’s the hardest part of running a solo business?”
Batch your content. Write a week’s worth of posts in one sitting. Use a scheduling tool like Buffer or the native scheduler on LinkedIn. Posting daily becomes effortless when you spend 30 minutes on Sunday preparing.
The Content Distribution System Cheat Sheet shows you how to repurpose one long-form piece into a week of social posts.
How do you grow engagement without buying followers?
Engagement is a two-way street. You can’t just post and leave. Spend 10 minutes per day replying to comments on your posts and commenting on other people’s posts. Real engagement beats any growth hack.
Comment on posts from people in your niche. Add value. Don’t just say “Great post.” Share your take, ask a question, or add a tip. People click on your profile when your comment makes them curious. That’s how you get followers who actually care about what you do.
Reply to every comment on your own posts within 24 hours. The algorithm rewards quick responses. More importantly, your readers feel seen. Some of my best client relationships started with a simple reply to a comment.
Use the Niche of One Cheat Sheet to define exactly who you’re trying to reach. When you know your audience, every comment and post becomes more relevant.
