I Spent $2,400 on Courses Before Realizing 3 Skills Actually Pay

Between 2023 and 2024 I bought 7 courses. “Digital Marketing Mastery.” “Copywriting Bootcamp.” “SaaS Building for Beginners.” Total spent: $2,400. Total income directly from those courses: $0. The skills that actually made me money were not taught in any course. I learned them by doing them wrong enough times. I have narrowed down the high-income skill stack to exactly 3 skills: writing, selling, and building. If you master these three, you do not need anything else to build a successful solo business.

What 3 skills actually made me money?

I ranked every skill I learned by how much money it directly generated. The ranking is brutal but honest:

1. Writing (generated ~80% of my income) — Not “content writing.” I mean the ability to turn a complex idea into a clear sentence. Landing pages that convert. Emails that get opened. Threads that get shared. I made my first $3,700 as a freelancer by writing landing pages — copy, not “content.” The difference: copy sells, content informs. I learned to write copy by studying 50 landing pages and rewriting each one by hand. No course needed.

2. Selling (generated ~15% of my income) — I used to think selling was slimy. Then my bank account hit $0 in October 2024 and I had to pitch 12 people in one afternoon. 3 said yes. I made $1,491 that week. Selling is just: ask what someone needs → tell them how you can help → ask for the money. That is it. I overcomplicated it for 14 months.

3. Building (generated ~5% of my income but multiplied everything) — I do not mean coding. I mean the ability to ship something fast. A landing page in 2 hours. A lead magnet in 1 evening. A simple automation with tools like n8n. I built this entire cheatsheet.cc site in 3 weeks using no-code tools. Building removes dependency on other people. That speed alone is worth more than any skill you can learn in a class.

How do you practice each skill without a course?

I built a 30-day practice protocol for each skill. No courses. No subscriptions. Just deliberate repetition with feedback loops.

Writing (30 min/day): I pick one landing page from a site I admire. I rewrite it from memory. Then I compare my version to the original. The gap between the two is where I learn. I did this for 60 days straight. By day 30, my own writing was sharper. By day 60, a client paid me $800 for a landing page rewrite. No course. Just imitation + iteration.

Selling (15 min/day): I write 3 DM drafts to people who might need my help. I do not send them — I just write. Then I rewrite each one using the MVO structure from the MVO Builder. After 30 days of writing drafts, sending the real ones felt natural. I closed my first $497 client from a DM. The practice is the rehearsal, not the performance. 99% of online courses are a waste of money for solo founders. The one exception: courses that make you DO something, not LEARN something. If the course does not require you to ship a project by week 2, skip it. “Knowledge” you cannot apply in 48 hours is entertainment, not education. I learned more by shipping 8 bad projects than from any of the 7 courses I bought.
